May 12 is Manitoba Day!

Well, here I go again with my litany May 12 is Manitoba Day! This means it’s time to start thinking about the different events and activities Manitoba museums can hold in order to celebrate our province’s 138th birthday!

The benefits to holding events like heritage fairs, open houses, and other heritage activities are many. They help to promote your museum in your community, they can increase visitorship, they encourage young people to get involved, they generate interest in your museum, and now holding a heritage event for Manitoba Day can get you free air time and win you a delicious and beautiful prize!

This year Culture, Heritage, Tourism and Sport (CHT&S) and the Association of Manitoba Museums (AMM) are getting together to make holding Manitoba Day events extra special.

Here’s what to do: If you’re planning a special event contact Elaine Kisiow at Historic Resources (945-8755 or elaine.kisiow@gov.mb.ca) tell her all about it and then she’ll pass your information on to the AMM.

Manitoba Day BasketWhen Elaine passes on your museum’s name, and Manitoba Day event, to the AMM we’ll do the following things with the information. First, your museum’s event will get posted on our website (remember pictures are always welcome) where everyone can see it. Secondly, your museum will be entered in a draw the AMM is holding for a Made in Manitoba Gift Basket. The basket contains yummy things like strawberry syrup, cranberry raisin cookie mix and beautiful things like a Métis sash and fine art notepaper! The name of the winning museum will be drawn on May 12, Manitoba Day!, at the AMM office.

Your Manitoba Day event could also get mentioned on the not-for-profit radio station CJNU. The AMM will again be purchasing air time on the station and we will be producing radio spots for the station to air throughout the month of May. We will also be looking for people who would be willing to be interviewed by someone at the station.

The interview would give you an opportunity to promote your museum and its Manitoba Day events. The interview could be done live or it could be recorded to be aired at a later date. So, if you’d like to take advantage of this free air time give the AMM office a call and we’ll set it up for you

Celebrate Manitoba Day and promote your museum for free on the radio! Get kids excited about heritage! Win a Made in Manitoba Gift Basket! The month of May is made for Manitoba museums. Enjoy it!
