The Land: Inuit Perspectives, opening at The Winnipeg Art Gallery on May 10, draws upon works from the Gallery’s collection to explore this theme. The exhibition continues until September 14, 2008. This exhibition contains interpretations of the landscape in both prints and wall hangings. Although sculpture does not lend itself easily to landscape subject matter, the WAG’s collection does contain a few, some of which will also be included. It is these misconceptions that inform the work of Kent Monkman, whose exhibition Kent Monkman: The Triumph of Mischief will have a free public opening at The Winnipeg Art Gallery on Thursday, June 5 from 7:30 to 10pm. The exhibition will be on view from June 6 to August 17, 2008. Of Irish/English and Cree ancestry, raised in Manitoba and now living in Toronto, Monkman uses video, photography, painting, installation, and performance art to construct new stories that take into account the missing narratives and perspectives of Aboriginal peoples. His work re-invents the past as a way of challenging one-dimensional representations of First Nations people and changing the way we think, not only about specific histories, but about the construction and authority of capital H history itself. This exhibition is a collaborative project between the Art Gallery of Hamilton, the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art, and the Art Gallery of greater Victoria. Sponsored by the Canada Council for the Arts and The Dorothy Strelsin Foundation. MEDIA PREVIEW with the artist: Wednesday, June 4, 2pm. Free Public Opening: Thursday, June 5, 7:30 to 10pm Celebrate the opening of the exhibition with artist Kent Monkman. Musical performance by Les Six Croches. Xu’s sculptures represent the impermanent traces the human body leaves as it passes through the world: its shadow, fingerprints or an indentation in a pillow. Lin Xu lives and works in Brandon, Manitoba where she is a ceramics professor in the Visual Arts department at Brandon University. IN THE COMMUNITY GALLERY: Ruth Stewart Looking at Earned Beauty This year marks the 125th anniversary of many surrounding local towns and municipalities. These anniversaries serve as a time to reflect on and celebrate the past, present, and future possibilities of these places and their people. Thus it seems fitting that Ruth Stewart presents an exhibition of abstract paintings that are a response to the “hand-me-down” stories of farmwomen, both past and present. The works capture the fleeting moments of beauty that can be found in everyday life; whether weeding the garden, taking a walk, or creating a scrap quilt. As Stewart explains; “The paintings in this exhibition are meant to give us a sense of the way that beauty appeared to these women – in small flashes.” Stewart is a recent graduate of the Bachelor of Fine Arts program at Brandon University. Xu’s exhibitions will continue until August 23, 2008 and Stewart’s will continue until August 09, 2008 Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba 710 Rosser Avenue Brandon, Manitoba R7A 0K9 Hours: Monday to Saturday, 10 AM-6 PM-open Thursday nights until 9 PM Admission Free Media Contact: Amber Andersen 204.727.1036 www.agsm.ca For more info: www.agsm.ca Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba 7/10/2008 to 8/9/2008 Contact: 204-727-1036 Email: director@agsm.ca IN THE COMMUNITY GALLERY: Ruth Stewart: Looking at Earned Beauty This year marks the 125th anniversary of many surrounding local towns and municipalities. Class time runs from one hour for the younger children up to two hours for the older ones. The WAG’s Studio Programs has several programs for adults including a two-week photography course which will run from 9:30am to noon, August 11 to 22. Things will start to get friendly on Thursday, September 18, as the pre-conference workshop will have us Dating the Decision Makers while later in the conference we'll be talking about Wooing the Web. After breaking the ice the Canadian Fossil Discovery Centre will be sending a warm invitation to conference delegates asking them to get to know the Centre a little better during a wine and cheese reception. Intimacy will continue during the conference as we discuss how to court and develop lasting and rewarding partnerships and how making connections using the internet should be encouraged. The plans for Friday include a cozy lunch at the Pembina Threshermen's Museum followed by tour options. One of the options will include a geo-caching adventure! After the tours delegates will re-group for our always warm, wild and fun banquet and auction. The location of the banquet hasn't yet been determined. Saturday will have more sessions regarding making meaningful connections with others, the AGM, and a group encounter designed to foster open and frank discussion about the AMM, its goals, and what direction our members want to take their relationship with the organization. Delegates can also look forward to some fantastic local entertainment while enjoying the company of other AMM members. Watch your mail for more information and the registration form. Keep checking the website for updates. Please note that these are events that are currently being planned for. Changes may have to be made. One activity taking place will be geo-caching! More details will be posted as they become available.
