Over the past two decades, landscape as a subject in its own right and not merely as background, has become increasingly important among Inuit artists. The Land: Inuit Perspectives, opening at The Winnipeg Art Gallery on May 10, draws upon works from the Gallery’s collection to explore this theme. The exhibition continues until September 14, 2008. This exhibition contains interpretations of the landscape in both prints and wall hangings. Although sculpture does not lend itself easily to landscape subject matter, the WAG’s collection does contain a few, some of which will also be included. Related Program Art for Lunch | Wednesday, June 4 | 12:10pm Join Darlene Coward Wight, Curator of Inuit Art for a tour of this exhibition.

Kent Monkman: The Triumph of Mischief
6/5/2008 to 8/17/2008
Contact: 204-786-6641
Email: inquiries@wag.mb.ca
Nineteenth-century photography and Romantic painting, colonial portrayals of Aboriginal peoples, and Hollywood films and television have all presented a damaging and inaccurate stereotypical representation of First Nations' art and history. It is these misconceptions that inform the work of Kent Monkman, whose exhibition Kent Monkman: The Triumph of Mischief will have a free public opening at The Winnipeg Art Gallery on Thursday, June 5 from 7:30 to 10pm. The exhibition will be on view from June 6 to August 17, 2008. Of Irish/English and Cree ancestry, raised in Manitoba and now living in Toronto, Monkman uses video, photography, painting, installation, and performance art to construct new stories that take into account the missing narratives and perspectives of Aboriginal peoples. His work re-invents the past as a way of challenging one-dimensional representations of First Nations people and changing the way we think, not only about specific histories, but about the construction and authority of capital H history itself. This exhibition is a collaborative project between the Art Gallery of Hamilton, the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art, and the Art Gallery of greater Victoria. Sponsored by the Canada Council for the Arts and The Dorothy Strelsin Foundation. MEDIA PREVIEW with the artist: Wednesday, June 4, 2pm. Free Public Opening: Thursday, June 5, 7:30 to 10pm Celebrate the opening of the exhibition with artist Kent Monkman. Musical performance by Les Six Croches. Related Program Artist Talk: Saturday, June 7, 2pm Join Kent Monkman as he discusses his work that invites viewers to question the stereotypes, racism, violence, and power struggles upon which the New World was founded. Included with Gallery admission.

Summer is a great time for kids. Without school and homework, they have more time to relax and do fun things like art programs at The Winnipeg Art Gallery. Whether it’s a one and a half-hour morning class or an intensive two-week program, the WAG offers a variety of classes for children and adults. Summer art classes for children run from Monday, August 11, to Friday, August 22, with two-week morning or afternoon classes in clay, animation, and other media for children ages 5 to 15. Teens 16 years and over are invited to register for the adult classes. The young students will visit the Gallery’s exhibitions and work with artist-instructors to explore a wide range of art-making activities and materials. Class time runs from one hour for the younger children up to two hours for the older ones. The WAG’s Studio Programs has several programs for adults including a two-week photography course which will run from 9:30am to noon, August 11 to 22. Week-long workshops run from 10am to 4pm August 11 to 15 and 18 to 22. Topics include drawing and oil and acrylic painting. The watercolour and collage workshop offers both studio and en plein air painting in Assiniboine Park as weather permits. You can find more information on summer classes at wag.mb.ca. Call Studio Programs at 789-1766 for details on registration and fees. If you run a summer camp or day care centre, consider bringing the children to the WAG for one and a half-hour art programs that allow them to creatively stretch their imaginations. Programs can be booked for morning or afternoon, in English or French, for ages 4 to 15. The age-specific programs have children using movement to explore lines and shapes, composing stories based on artwork, exploring Inuit art and culture, and painting their own pictures. Cost for these programs is $2.50 per child. One adult is admitted free of charge for every 10 youths. Additional adults pay full adult admission of $6. You can find more information on the programs offered on wag.mb.ca or call 789-1762 (English) or 789-1763 (French).
