IN THE MAIN GALLERY:
Lin Xu: UTILITY/OBJECT REFLECTIONS
Through her most recent work, ceramicist Lin Xu will allow the viewer to experience one of the earliest mediums used by humankind in a contemporary way that truly reflects the breadth of ceramics today. Xu’s sculptures represent the impermanent traces the human body leaves as it passes through the world: its shadow, fingerprints or an indentation in a pillow. Lin Xu lives and works in Brandon, Manitoba where she is a ceramics professor in the Visual Arts department at Brandon University.
IN THE COMMUNITY GALLERY:
Ruth Stewart
Looking at Earned Beauty This year marks the 125th anniversary of many surrounding local towns and municipalities. These anniversaries serve as a time to reflect on and celebrate the past, present, and future possibilities of these places and their people. Thus it seems fitting that Ruth Stewart presents an exhibition of abstract paintings that are a response to the “hand-me-down” stories of farmwomen, both past and present. The works capture the fleeting moments of beauty that can be found in everyday life; whether weeding the garden, taking a walk, or creating a scrap quilt. As Stewart explains; “The paintings in this exhibition are meant to give us a sense of the way that beauty appeared to these women – in small flashes.” Stewart is a recent graduate of the Bachelor of Fine Arts program at Brandon University.
Xu’s exhibitions will continue until August 23, 2008 and Stewart’s will continue until August 09, 2008
