| Description |
The Charlebois Heritage Museum will open for its first season on June 16th. Its last day of the season will be August 29. Cards and books about Bishop Charlebois are available for sale at a very modest cost.
The Charlebois Chapel was built in 1897 by Father Ovide Charlebois. It has been designated as an historical place and the displays depict the history of the Archdiocese, Bishop Charlebois, and the church itself.
The collection includes:
- A very interesting display of 6 panels from The Saint Boniface Heritage Centre with pictures from our Archdiocese. The missions portrayed are Ile-à- la Crosse, Canoe Lake, Buffalo Narrows and La Loche.
- Oral and written displays telling personal stories about Bishop Charlebois.
- Pictures that show the restoration process of the little chapel originally built in 1897 along with some historical facts about the Archdiocese.
- A collage of pictures of the Bishop at different times in his life.
Ovide Charlebois was born in Québec in 1862 and, after being ordained a priest in 1887, he came out west as a missionary. He was named Vicar Apostolic (bishop) of Keewatin in 1910. He laboured at the difficult task of organizing his vast vicariate with humble yet indominable patience and courage. He believed that one was a fool not to try to be a saint. His motto: To Jesus through Mary. Bishop Charlebois died in1933 and his cause for beatification was introduced in 1979.
